A zoo in Copenhagen euthanized a young male giraffe to prevent inbreeding in their giraffe stock this weekend. Afterwards, they held a public dissection in which children were allowed to witness with parental permission, and then the body was used to feed the zoo's lions.
Of course, since Saint Louisians think animals are totally like humans, they promptly banged out sentences of misunderstanding to show their displeasure in something they don't know or have any say in.
Here's a few facts before we tear into the meat of this one:
Zoos could design new giraffe facilities, but many don't have that option. A young bull could theoretically be sent to an all-female group as a stud, but experts prefer a larger, more mature male for that, and Marius didn't fit that bill. A final option is sending the giraffe to a zoo that doesn't participate in the EAZA-led breeding programme, but that could leave the giraffe or its offspring being sold into worse circumstances, such as those of a circus or private collection. It must be remembered that Marius was not a form of rare subspecies
And:
On Average, he said some 20 to 30 animals, including goats, antelopes and wild boar, were culled for the same reason every year at the zoo.
"This is the first giraffe, I do not understand the outrage. We are all used to on a current basis of animals being culled in the wild.
Literally took less than a minute to find all this information. Of course, if everyone did that, we wouldn't have this wonderful blog.

I'm sure Debbie Brader Travis is just an expert on what goes on behind closed doors at the St. Louis zoo. I hear the keepers force the primates to act out entire scenes from hit Broadway musicals, even though the animals HATE Rent. Five Hundred Twenty-Five Thousand Six Hundred Minutes is a terrible song and will now be stuck in your head all day.
This isn't "dirty work", it's just work. I'm sure everyone is upset because wide angle photos of giraffes up close are totes adorbs compared to boar.
Although, bacon has never been cuter |
Oh fuck, Sherri Shirley Stoudt isn't going to go to the Copenhagen zoo! Denmark's GDP will surely suffer at then hands of her not going overseas to look at animals.
I can't imagine anyone thinks about what they are saying before they just throw out some stupid words to agree with everyone else. It's OK to take a minute to form a better, more intelligent thought about this thing you don't even try to understand.
Lisa Landrum Troxler has some fucked up memories if she A: Remembers Hitler in any aspect other than the history books and B: Thinks Hitler exterminated giraffes as a part of Jewish ethnic cleansing.
Though I'll admit, certainly didn't check Marius's junk for a circumcision, so I can't say there isn't a connection. If there is, my history books left a fairly absurd part of history out for some reason. I didn't know Jewish giraffes existed, let alone being persecuted. Thanks for keeping my education ongoing, Lisa.
